How to Do Constance Wu’s Skincare Routine

Her high-low mix of luxury and drugstore products.
Constance Wu skincare routine

Ever since she rose to fame as the star of Crazy Rich Asians, Constance Wu has stood out for her luminous, youthful-looking skin. And get this. She’s actually 39 years old—even though, with that complexion, she could easily pass for 10 years younger.

“I’ve always had pretty good skin, generally, so I haven’t had to worry too much,” she told Refinery29[1]. “I’ve also always taken really good care of my skin since I was little, so I guess that’s helpful.”

As a teen, that meant budget brands like Neutrogena and Clean & Clear, which, believe it or not, have remained in her rotation to this day. (“When I was a kid, nice skincare for me—because I grew up in suburban Richmond, Virginia—was like Neutrogena that you would get at the drugstore. So that’s what I used; Neutrogena or, like, Clean & Clear.”)

And now, she’s added higher-end skincare such as La Mer and Drunk Elephant into the mix, along with her latest discovery: Asian beauty products.

“I’m discovering Asian beauty and skincare as the rest of us in America are. I didn’t even know that they have, like, eight steps, or whatever that they do.”

She’s just not down with the “skin-whitening” products that are popular in Asia. “When I was in Singapore and Malaysia filming Crazy Rich Asians... the salesgirls would push whitening products on me and try to fade my freckles. This comes from an old Asian cultural idea that dark skin signifies being in the fields and working-class,” she explained to Allure[2]. “I’m not a white translucent tulip. I’m the granddaughter of Chinese bamboo farmers, the daughter of immigrants, the sister of an ultramarathoner (who runs for hours... in the sun!), and an American. I like my freckles and my natural skin colour. It’s who I am.”

Her Diet, Exercise and Lifestyle

Diet

“Since I turned 30, I’ve had to think about diets more. It’s not necessarily for weight reasons but because I got adult eczema. I don’t want to be on steroid creams, so I worked with a dermatologist on an elimination diet to see what foods triggered it. We found some very specific things, like pineapple, which I now have to avoid.”

Exercise

“I’m not really into ‘fitness.’ I’m into running because it’s relaxing for me and meditative. When I want to veg out, I go for a run. It calms me. I’ve run a couple marathons. When I’m not working, I run, like, six miles a day.”

Lifestyle

“It’s important to connect back to real-life things that bring you meaning, like going out in nature or talking to your best friend from high school.”
